 Drop the Rules:

How to turn silver into gold – part 2/7

To truly experience long-term life success, we must release that which no longer serves us.  In this 7 part series, you’ll learn different perspectives on healing through grief with exercises to help you; whether now or in the future. At the end of this series, you’ll have 7 new practical and effective tools for your life tool kit.

No matter what adversity you experience, you get through it. You never get over it. Without giving yourself time to grieve in the way that is right for you, you resist the very thing you are trying to do: get through the situation and heal.

In this 7 part series, you’ll learn:

The best gift you can give yourself – part 1

How to turn silver into gold – part 2

Just how important your voice is

How you car is your lifeline

Why hugging a tree is important

The six letter word that changes everything

What cooking teaches us about healing

Here’s to dropping the rules!

How to turn silver into gold

In part 1, we addressed forgiveness. Today, we’ll talk about blessings. I’m sure you’ve heard the expression, “Every cloud has a silver lining.” For every experience that appears ‘negative’ there is an equal and opposite positive experience available. Sometimes, we are given challenges to learn from and through these challenging times we learn the blessings…the silver lining.

In one such life experience, I felt a gold lining as the transformation that occurred for all involved was simply magic. This experience is still fresh in my mind. In 2009, I became an unexpected full-time caregiver for my parents…simultaneously. I’ve always been a daddy’s girl. When he suffered traumatic brain injury, I grieved the person he used to be. Being one to help people release things that no longer serve them, be at peace and accept what is, I decided to make the best of the situation. I picked my dad’s brain.

I asked him about all of his hopes, regrets, dreams, best this and best that, favorite traditions and much, much more. You can read more about this in my legacy series:

In doing this, I accomplished two things. First, I helped him be Tandy_Elisala_and_Dadmore at peace. He was able to reflect on his life and see what worked and what didn’t. He healed. Second, I was able to see him for the man he was beyond the role of being my father. I was able to put puzzle pieces together from his life and see why he raised me the way he did. I gained a deeper appreciation for my dad. Amid all the trauma and drama during this time, what a HUGE blessing this was. This picture to the right was me and my dad Memorial Day 2010; a week after he got home after spending six months in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, etc… Can you tell I’m a daddy’s girl!?! I miss you dad.

Is there a burden or challenge you have? Think about the blessing in the burden. If you need help, get a piece of paper and start listing things you have learned, people you’ve met, opportunities that have come your way, a skill you developed or inner strength you realized was within you as a result of this experience. Whatever it is, write it down, look at the list, smile and give thanks for the blessing.

IT’S YOUR TURN: Please comment below with one blessing you discovered today! Alternatively, you can comment on any legacy building ideas you have. Your ideas may spark something for others that read this.

Lynda, I’m sorry you are having a bad day. Tomorrow is a new day and I know with your Pilates with Reiki practice, you will be anew in no time. I can understand depression though and how some days are better than others. I appreciate you stopping by Lynda:-) Hang in there.

Hi Suzy, I couldn’t agree more. All lessons are here for us to learn from, grow from and carry these lessons forward. Caregiving for parents is certainly one of the most difficult yet rewarding times of life.
