What Advanced Directives and Underwear Have In Common

Have  you ever heard the phrase “you better have a clean pair of underwear in your car in case of accident?”  We’ll get back to this in a minute:-)  Did you know that less than 30% of people actually have advanced directives in the event of an emergency or incapacitation? Really. 30%. That’s not a lot of people when you think about it. I wonder why this is? Is it because people are too busy to get these documents in order? Is it because people think that nothing will happen to them? Is it because people simply haven’t thought about it or realize the importance? Is it because people mistakenly think that if they put something in writing, they are doomed?

I’ll admit that I was behind the times when I got my will and advanced medical directive. I got them when I was getting married a second time. My kids were minors and I was the sole provider and parent for them. Given this, I should have especially had this documented!  Sure, I talked about my wishes and all of that but I hadn’t put it in writing until my kids were 8, 11 and 15. Seriously. I praise God everyday that nothing happened requiring this documentation. How about you? Do YOU have this information documented? Is it up to date? Does everyone involved either have a copy or know where the documents are?

Your life can change in the blink of an eye. It happens everyday. I don’t mean to sound pessimistic but there are so  many things outside of your control that happen each and every day. You honestly never know when you are going to be faced with a life changing situation. December 22nd, 2009, my life changed in the blink of an eye when my dad was involved in a massive accident involving over 21 cars and semis. Actually, he was hit by a semi and rolled into the median. Our lives were never the same. This is when my intense caregiving journey began for both of my parents simultaneously for different reasons. He was my mother’s caregiver until this day. Never in my wildest dreams would I have predicted something like this happening to our family. Nobody does. Yet it happens.

My message: be prepared!!!

Here are some ways you can easily get this done and make things accessible when needed. There is an app called: My Health Care Wishes App. This app allows you to store, update, email and print all your documents in one place. There is a lite version and a pro version. The pro version is $3.99 and you store documents for all family members. Imagine everyone storing all information on this app and sharing among the family. What peace of mind you’d have! Empowerment and peace of mind is one click away. No, I am not an affiliate with this company. I’ve heard good things about it. Of course, you can always use dropbox to store your documents as well.

The New York Times recently published an article about this topic and had some other recommendations as well as the above for storing your directives.

So, what do advanced directives and underwear have in common. Momma is always right and just as you should have an extra pair of underwear available ‘just in case’, you should also have advanced directives in place ‘just in case’. In this case, though, the advanced directives are more important than the underwear!
